YOUR HEALTHY TIDBITS; VOLUME 17 ISSUE 21

TIDBIT #1

It’s not uncommon to feel hurt by certain things people say or do at times, but it is manageable. What you think directly influences how you feel and respond. By changing your mindset, you can learn to manage your emotions. It’s a process that may require some practice. But with a bit of time and patience, you’ll be able to cope better. Remember that you’re primarily responsible for your feelings, and because of that, no one can make you feel anything.

The Wonderful Company, California-based maker of the popular pomegranate juice POM, is the state’s second-largest user of paraquat (a toxic herbicide banned in over 60 countries), a new Environmental Working Group investigation finds. Studies have found a strong connection between paraquat exposure and an elevated risk of Parkinson’s disease. The chemical has also been linked with non-Hodgkin lymphoma and childhood leukemia. “Despite The Wonderful Company’s claims to eschew ‘dangerous chemicals,’ its actions are unnecessarily endangering farmworker communities throughout California,” said Scott Faber, EWG senior VP for government affairs and co-author of the analysis. “With dozens of countries banning paraquat due to its health hazards, it's clear that use of the chemical is unnecessary for crop production.” Wonderful’s brands include POM pomegranate juice, Landmark Vineyards wine and Fiji Water, among many others.

TIDBIT #3: DIET TIP

Snack On Apples and Berries Every Day. They contain the antioxidants anthocyanins, powerful disease-fighting plant compounds. Munch on the fruits alone, or combine with protein for extra satiety: apples with a small piece of cheese, or peanut butter, and berries with Greek yogurt or oatmeal help keep cravings to a minimum.

Beets boast an impressive nutritional profile. They are low in calories, yet high in valuable vitamins and minerals. In fact, they contain a bit of almost all the vitamins and minerals that you need. Beets are a good source of fiber, which is beneficial for digestive health, as well as reducing the risk of a number of chronic health conditions. Studies in isolated human cells and rats have shown that the pigments in beets may help reduce the growth of cancer cells.
